When the .NET gTLD was initially introduced in 1985, together with the first domain extensions on the World Wide Web, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure establishments. Since there were no particular regulations about the usage of the top-level extension, though, .NET domains were secured and used for different purposes and by a huge number of people. This extension represents a perfect substitute of dot COM, notably if the desirable domain with the latter domain extension is not available for registration.
